The Whole and the Sum of Its Parts

1+1=2. This is probably the first mathematical equation we learned. If only life were that simple...

Have you ever wondered why life doesn't always add up? Why some things don't appear on the other side of the equation? Or why no matter how you account for everything, you still can't predict the outcome?

I've had my fair share of Mathematics in the BS Chemistry curriculum. I wouldn't say I'm any good at it but boy do I know about addition. I know its commutative, distributive, associative, and something something properties. Okay fine, I don't know everything about it but I do know enough. I know enough about it that when things pile up, I am practically programmed to add them together. When the answer doesn't fit, I question my solution.

Sometimes we think we've miscalculated. Sometimes we think we're missing something. Maybe we have. Maybe we are. But maybe there's just no summing up life. That is, the whole isn't always equal to the sum of its parts.

But who said we are to add things up anyway? Who said we have to live life by the numbers at all?

For your sake, ponder upon that last paragraph before you read the post scripts.

P.S. Could it be that I'm just not summing things up in an infinite number of steps? That I'm not integrating, that is. Haha. Calculus. That I don't know much about.

This blog was inspired by Beyonce' who, as her song goes, doesn't know much about algebra but knows that 1+1=2. ---> Ansabeh? Baka arithmetic te?!
